Catholic Employment Relations to be integrated with Catholic Schools NSW to enhance services for Catholic employers

22 September 2023

Catholic Employment Relations Ltd (CER) is pleased to announce a significant development in its ongoing commitment to serving Catholic organisations with their employment law needs.

CER will soon be integrated into Catholic Schools NSW (CSNSW), joining the Legal and Risk team, and marking the end of the CER entity. This development is a strategic decision made collaboratively by the Boards of CSNSW and CER, reflecting the changing landscape of Catholic employment relations. The previous CER employment relations services will continue to be provided to its members under these changed governance arrangements.

Chris Owens, the CER Director of Legal and Professional Services, has been appointed as Deputy General Counsel of CSNSW. As a former employee of CSNSW and with a wealth of experience in employment law, Chris Owens' appointment ensures a seamless transition for CER into CSNSW and a continuity of service for members and clients.

Dallas McInerney, CEO of Catholic Schools NSW, commented that “CSNSW is delighted to have CER join us as it continues to provide outstanding employment relations services to Catholic organisations. We look forward to seeing CER continue its work to support Catholic organisations to be exceptional employers.”

Key Highlights

Location: CER will now operate from the CSNSW premises in Angel Place, Sydney CBD. All contact information will remain the same.

CER understands the unique challenges faced by Catholic workplaces and will continue to guide and support organisations through complex decisions.

Mission: CER’s vision and mission remain unchanged: to provide expert employment relations, human resources, and industrial relations advice and assistance to Catholic organisations, helping them achieve their mission by preventing and addressing workplace issues.

About CER and CSNSW History

The Catholic Commission for Employment Relations (CCER) was a not-for-profit organisation established by the Bishops of New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) to advise and represent the interests of Catholic employers on a broad range of employment relations and human resource issues. Three and a half years ago, the Bishops of NSW made the decision to establish CER Ltd and to reform our service profile. As the successor to CCER, CER takes a multidisciplinary approach to the provision of advice on all aspects of Catholic agencies’ relationships with their staff. This good work will continue under the CER brand under these changed governance arrangements.

This merger is a strategic decision made collaboratively by the Boards of CSNSW and CER, reflecting the changing landscape of Catholic employment relations.
