Appointment of Peter Smith as CEO

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Peter Smith as Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Employment Relations Limited, effective 7 April 2026. Peter will assume the role of Authorised Principal and join the Board of Catholic Employment Relations Limited on 26 May 2026.

Peter brings extensive leadership experience in workplace relations and law, with a strong track record in industrial relations developed over more than three decades across complex, highly regulated and people focused environments. He is recognised for his ability to navigate the evolving workplace relations landscape and deliver practical, high-quality outcomes for clients and stakeholders.

Most recently, Peter served as 'Head of Industrial Relations – Operations' at Qantas Airways Limited, where he led enterprise-wide industrial relations strategy, including complex negotiations, tribunal matters and workforce change initiatives. His legal career spans senior roles across private practice, unions and the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

Peter’s appointment marks an important step in the continued strengthening of Catholic Employment Relations and its service to Catholic employers. It reinforces our focus on providing trusted, high quality employment relations and legal support, while strengthening sector leadership in industrial relations, advocacy and enterprise bargaining across Catholic education and ministries. This work responds to the evolving needs of the sector and is grounded in the dignity of the human person, underpinning a consistent focus on fairness, integrity and just outcomes in employment relations.

Under the current structure, Peter will hold responsibility for oversight of legal services and compliance, while Nick Tindley will continue as Managing Principal, managing day to day operations. This model reinforces strong governance and regulatory compliance while maintaining continuity of service. The existing team, client relationships and service delivery remain unchanged.

This appointment marks an important milestone for Catholic Employment Relations as we continue to strengthen our supportive relationships with our subscribers. Please join us in welcoming Peter to CER.
